For the past two weeks, health science II students at the Dorchester Career School have been taking a leap towards their future careers. The Health Science program is designed for students who are looking to have a career in medical professions.  For the past two weeks they have been volunteering at the Presbyterian Nursing Home in Summerville. Here they are getting their clinical hours, so they will be eligible to take the C.N.A (certified nursing assistant) test. If the students in Health Science II pass this test, they will have a license to be a nurse assistant.  Jaton, one of the students, told me what she felt about career school and her experience at the nursing home.

Patriot Press: Why should someone sign up to take career(vocational) school?

Jaton: If you want to go ahead a start working on your future job, I believe that this program is for you.

PP: Out of all the courses you can take at career school, why did you choose Health Science?

Jaton: I chose to take Health Science because I want to be a LPN when I am older and here, this program will help me get a jump start to reach my goal faster.

PP: How has your experience at the nursing home and what is your favorite/least thing you liked about it?

J: My experience at the nursing home showed me exactly what a CNA has to do everyday at their job. It makes me more driven to get a higher degree in nursing. Don’t get me wrong, it is not a bad job to have, but I’d rather be able to do more then what the CNAs can do. My favorite thing was to see how happy the residents were to have someone help them with their needs. At the end of the day, the smile on their faces is worth all the hard work. My least favorite thing was getting up so early; I had to be at the nursing home before school even started.

PP: In the end would you say you were glad you did this?

J: I would have to say yes. This program is helping me reach my CNA license in high school and it is a great experience to have.

Career School is a great way to jump start your career. If health science is not for you, you can check out all the other programs they offer.
