Many of the students at Fort Dorchester come and go as a mandatory process while others make the memories that will last them forever. High school for teens can be a dreadful experience but in the end high school will make a teenager become the adults we aspire to be. It may not be for all people though, schooling is difficult for some who have greater talents in other areas. While teachers and parents are unable to see and understand, the time we spend with our peers greatly effects the person we will become. Not every child is able to experience the blessing of having a family or having a home life, but Fort Dorchester is a family for all of us. Our friends come and go, but their footprints are always in your heart. Some of them stay for a lifetime, which is the best part of high school. It can also be a vicious place when things have been disturbed. Girls and boys also are not afraid to express the way they feel and eventually it will become a trait that everyone learns to control. People say things that others will bare forever in their memory. Hopefully students will watch what they say, and how they act. Both words and actions last a lifetime.

For as long as Fort Dorchester High School has been standing the classes have been uniquely tied together, and were like family. Its always been controversial that cliques segregate the school, when it only makes teens feel comfortable in their enviroment. Most of Fort Dorchester seniors have been in many of the same classes since grade school, and they have all experienced the same pains, and also the same joyful times. Senority is respect that every underclassmen works up to. Every senior has rightfully earned their respect by fighting through the years and never giving up. In a family, we have brothers and sisters and the seniors carry the title of the elder brothers and sisters, many freshman look up to the seniors and count down the days that they get to experience that last year. The little things that happen during all of your years in high school will always somehow effect either the people around you or which path you yourself choose to do down. The grades you make, the people you associate yourself with, and the choices that you choose to make will always adjudicate the way you live your life. 2011 seniors are going to be greatly missed, they will be allowed to carry the memories that Fort Dorchester had given them and they will always have left their own handprint on the school.

Senior Year At the Fort

By Anthony Cardona

For everyone that wants to get a high school diploma, they have too go through senior year. This year is critical for students and costs a lot of money and effort. I went around the school interviewing seniors and most had different opinions about this year.

Senior year, the last year of high school. Some seniors said this year was hard and others say it is easier. “I don’t have many classes and everything I’m learning this year is easy because it’s just a review from the previous years.” said Jessica Huger. Most of her peers that I interviewed said the same. Christianna Green thinks other wise, she said “It’s harder because you trying so hard to not ruin your GPA and there are more challenges to go through.”

To most seniors, this is not the year to be supine. You need to do your best for your GPA so more colleges will look at you. ”You make one wrong turn on this final year and your GPA is gone” said Green. Though Some people don’t plan on going right into college. Like Christianna, she plans on going into the United States Air Force to take on the nursing opportunity that they provide.

Senior year is very expensive. “It’s ridiculous how much senior year is, I feel like this year is just as expensive as all my previous years put together.” said Allen Rice. On your last year you need to pay for cap and gown, senior pictures, and extra activities, like senior trip.

To most seniors, this year is the most important year of high school, and they want to try their hardest and put all they got into it to get the most that they can get out of this final year.

At our school, you need 4 units of English, 4 units of math, 2 units of Science, 1 unit of Physical Science, Us History & The Constitution is 1 unit. Economics is a half unit along with US Government. Other Social Studies is 1 unit. Physical Education or JROTC is 1 unit. 1 unit for Computer Science, 1 unit of Foreign Language or Vocational Elective. Also, 7 units of additional electives, which is a total of 24 units to graduate.

Students between the ages of 5 and 18 years of age are expected to learn in school. It is their primary job in society, and it’s possibly the one thing that will prepare them to become productive members in their adult years. What they learn will also determine the choices they’ll make when they enter the workforce or continue onto higher education.

In order for students to learn there are several factors that must be considered. Most of these factors are external; they deal with social or cultural values. Also, it may be determined by the school’s environment as well as the teachers and administrators that teach them. Still, another important factor falls upon the student’s ability and willingness to learn.

People agree that it is up to a person’s ability to learn and what they do is what they should expect their grade to be. Many factors can come from their what a student achieves in school. What a students background is, what their learning style is or just simply what their interested in.

To truly succeed in an area of greatness you will need to be taught the resources you need to know.

Author John Jay Bonstingl writes, “Our research has shown that, when young people fail at school, it is most often not because they are stupid, lazy or psychologically incapable. Rather, it is because they have not been taught the developmentally appropriate tools, skills and strategies every child needs to succeed in school and in life.”

“Some people will never learn anything, for this reason, because they understand everything too soon.” -Alexander Pope

“If you study to remember, you will forget, but, If you study to understand, you will remember.” -Mark Twain
